Plasma TV Reliability
If you are interested in plasma TV reliability, chances are you're thinking of making a purchase. The good news is you don't have too much to worry about. You might even be wondering if you should purchase an extended warranty, and the answer depends a lot on just how often the television will be on.
According to consumer reports, you are wasting your money purchasing an extended warranty on a plasma television because they are extremely reliable. However most of the problems that occur with a plasma television occur later on outside of the initial warranty period.
So let's think about the extended warranty for a minute. A plasma television has a bulb in it. The bulb has a lifetime expectancy rate of about 5,000 hours. If you know you will put 5,000 hours of viewing time on the television before the warranty expires, then go ahead and get the extra warranty. The bulb will be covered. Generally the extended warranty should cost around 15% of the cost of the television, which should be around $200-$300. This will also be how much you will most likely pay if the bulb goes out and it needs to be replaced without a warranty. That makes the warranty a good buy because not only are you covered for the bulb going out, you'll also be covered in the unlikely event that something else goes wrong. On average, when people do have to pay for repairs the cost is around $400.
If on the other hand you won't put in 5000 hours before the warranty expires, think carefully about purchasing the warranty. The maintenance rate on most plasma televisions is very low. Do you want to spend a few hundred dollars to be covered "just in case?"
The plasma television that was ranked with the highest reliability and the fewest number of problems was the Panasonic 50-inch TH-50PZ70000U model. The liquid crystal display model for the Panasonic did have a 2% repair rate among consumers. Other brands of plasma screens with a low repair rating include the Toshiba and JVC.
The plasma screens that had the most problems were the Dell, who decided to no longer sell these televisions, and the Hitachi. The Philips plasma televisions also showed to be slightly more problematic for consumers.
Plasma TV reliability is very good. You are making an excellent purchase when you buy a plasma screen and you shouldn’t have to worry about having it repaired as often as you would with your old console cathode ray television. They are extremely reliable and will last for about 20 years if you take good care of it.
